There are two main approaches to design readable, immersive and interesting characters. Linking to culture archetypes, breaking them and working smart on each stage of character development. What criteria help artists and designers to deliver factions, heroes, and interesting crowd. This talk gathers conclusions after creating main NPSs, enemies and players for series of Call of Juarez, Dead Island, also preproduction of Hellraid, and many other games I had chance to work on including Dying Light 2. Talk shows general mindset and process divided on 10 obligatory stages that helps creator to find clear goals and common language with designers, programmers, other artists, even your noob auntie.

Konrad Czernik is a Senior Concept Artist with over 10 years experience in game development. Designer of main characters, environment, weapons and props for AAA games such as Dead Island and Call of Juarez series. Also leader of art team for Hellraid and Shortbreak Studios games. Currently working on Dying Light 2 focusing on creating believable and deeply immersive environment. During pre-production  to supported art direction by creating initial character art guide for the game. Outside game productions supports schools and universities with workshops, lectures and events.
